There are many misconceptions floating around the devotional sphere about the actual nature of initiation. In the following excerpt from a letter, Srila Prabhupada gives a clear definition.
Diksa, or initiation, means the beginning of spiritual realization. So every disciple must make his own spiritual progress positively and help others to do so.
